How to Block Windows 10 Upgrade Downloads If You're Not Ready For Them

It’s pretty great that you can get Windows 10 for free if you want it. If you don’t—or if you simply want to download it on your own terms—however, bad news: Microsoft is downloading it anyway. Here’s how to block it.

For the Windows 10 update, Microsoft has chosen to automatically start the download process, regardless of whether you’ve confirmed you want the update. This makes some sense for those who use automatic updates normally, except Windows 10 can be huge. As in multiple gigabytes huge. If you have a capped data connection, or simply don’t want to bother downloading it right now, Ghacks has laid out some steps for blocking the updates:

  1. Search for “Programs and features” in the Start Menu.
  2. Select “view installed updates” on the left side of the window.
  3. Windows 7: locate the following updates: 3035583, 2952664, 3021917
  4. Windows 8: locate the following updates: 3035583, 2976978
  5. Right-click each update select uninstall.
  6. Select Restart Later when the prompt appears.
  7. Restart when you’ve finished these steps for each update.

Once you’ve finished this process, you’ll need to block the updates from being installed again. To do that, follow these steps:

  1. Search for Windows Update in the Start Menu.
  2. Choose “check for updates.” Windows should find the same updates from above.
  3. Click on “important update is available.”
  4. Right-click each of the updates above and select “Hide update.”

This should prevent your computer from downloading those updates again in the future. Keep in mind that if you want to upgrade to Windows 10 later, you’ll need to unblock these updates. However, this should help prevent Microsoft from downloading several gigabytes of data to your machine when you’re not ready for it.

CloneApp Backs Up All Your Windows Program Settings

Windows: Whether you’re migrating to a new computer or doing a clean install, life is easier when you take all your settings and tweaks with you. If you don’t want to do a full backup and restore, CloneApp backs up settings for the most popular Windows programs so you can restore them later.

CloneApp essentially automates the process we detailed in our Windows migration guide: it knows where each program stores its settings and registry keys, and backs them all up in one fell swoop so you don’t have to do the legwork yourself. It supports 119 different Windows programs, can detect which programs you have installed, and even has a section for manual backups so you can include the programs it doesn’t support.

CloneApp is completely portable, too, so you don’t have to install anything. Just extract the program to its own folder on the desktop and right-click it to launch it as an administrator. From there, check the programs you want to back up, and click Start CloneApp. It’ll back up all the necessary files and registry keys to its folder, which you can then copy to your new computer, launch the program, and click Restore to put all your settings back where they belong.

Facebook Launches Standalone Messenger App for all Browsers

Facebook released a new standalone version of its Messenger app for browsers today. While the app still requires a Facebook account to use, it’s separate from the rest of Facebook to hopefully help keep you from being distracted by everything else on Facebook.

The Messenger app looks a lot like the mobile apps but bigger. You don’t get a ton of communication options within the app, but you can set up notifications and mute specific conversations if you need to. As you’d expect, you can also send stickers, photos, and emoji as well. Click the link below to try new website messenger and no need to download anything.

OnePlus One users in India will also get Cyanogen OS CM 12S OTA update

Putting an end to all speculation, Carl Pei, co-founder OnePlus  announced on Twitter that Indian users will get the Cyanogen OS CM12S OTA update. Thus, all users who have purchased the OnePlus One device in the last couple of months will receive the Cyanogen update, even as Oxygen OS is expected to be available from March 27.

To put things into perspective, OnePlus had earlier announced that Indian users would no longer get Cyanogen OS updates, and instead will be replaced with OnePlus’s custom built OxygenOS made specifically for the Indian audience. This shift from the hugely successful Cyanogen OS, was due to Micromax and Cyanogen’s exclusive India agreement, which effectively forced OnePlus to build a custom OS.

With this development, we do not know whether the three companies have made some sort of mutual agreement, but Indian users will welcome this news.

The Android 5.0 based Cyanogen OS CM 12S OTA update is scheduled to roll out from March 30 globally. The roll out will be gradual, so it might be a while before you receive a system notification.
